Aurora's Birthday

So there I was again...more then a week over due...and tired of being pregnant! So we went in (we being Dustin, my mom, my best friend Cara, and I) to the hospital Thursday morning of the 23rd of September at around 7:30am, I waited almost 2 hours there until I was finally given the Cervidil (a method of induction). I went home around 10am and waited for everything to start happening.

My contractions started around noon. I was able to get some sleep and then the contractions started to get strong and regular. We went back to the hospital around 6pm. When we got there they hooked me up to the monitor. What was cool was my room had a shower in it, and since I was having crazy back labor I spent a lot of time in there. When they decided I was in full fledged labor, they moved me to the labor and delivery room. 

It was just after 9 and the pain was really getting to me, so I asked to get something for it. They gave me a shot of fentanyl. The big difference between the Bonnyville hospital (Where I delivered Aurora) and the Wetaskiwin Hospital (Where I delivered Mercedes) was that they don't usually do epidurals, instead they do mini spinals. A mini spinal lasts anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours. So when she asked me If I wanted my spinal yet, I wasn't too sure because my labor had been going pretty slowly, and one thing I knew for sure is I wanted the best pain control at the very end (the hardest part obviously). 

I got my spinal administered around 10pm. That was great! I had been so worn out and had barely any energy left in me. So I got some sleep :) 

At 10:30 the baby's heart rate started to climb. The nurse that was with me switched my positions to try and lower it, but that only made it worse. That was when I got some pretty hard news...the doctor told me that there was one other woman in labor and she was getting a c-section, and when they were done with her, the doctor said they were more then likely going to have to give me a c-section! I knew that it was what was best for the baby but it was still a bit hard to hear. 

After my spinal wore off (around 1am Friday morning) my contractions got a lot stronger. The nurse checked me and I was only 8.5cm dilated! That was more then frustrating to hear. I asked if there was anything else they could do for pain, and she said no :(

The next 30 minutes went by very slowly. the baby's heart rate had come back down to normal. When the doctor came back to see what was shaking, I was fully dilated but the baby's head was still high up. But Thats when I started needing to push. The pain was so intense. I couldn't take it anymore, I wanted more then anything to have the baby. At that point I was begging for a c-section because of how much it hurt. But she finally was born at 2:07am and surprised us all by being a beautiful 9lb baby girl! 

It was hard though because they couldn't give her to me right away because there was meconium in the amniotic fluid, so they had to take her right away and pump it out of her. 

Afterwards when they were stitching me up (yes I need stitches after that...her head was 37cm round!) the doctor was worried that they would have to send me to the city because I was loosing a lot of blood. But luckily they got it under control.

So in the very end both Aurora and I were healthy and happy!
